Its coming…and real fast!!!
For those of you who watch National Geographic regularly, you may have watched a program some days back that was titled-‘The Big Freeze’. I happened to watch it by chance…. ofcourse since then I’ve thanked the transport team endlessly for having missed my name from the cab roster and given me the opportunity to utilize the extra hours watching something valuable that has helped me enhance my knowledge.
As I surfed the T.V channels to search for something worthwhile, Nat Geo caught my attention. Being the nature lover that I am, I feel rather drawn to watching programs on Discovery and National Geographic. That day, what made me stop at this particular channel was a picture of a frozen city. Every part of the city was covered under a blanket of ice, it looked abandoned and I must add eerie in a sense. Feeling intrigued by that picture, I decided to watch on. What I saw for the next half an hour left such an impact on me that I haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since and here I am, trying to leave a teenie – weenie bit of that mark on you.
We’re all aware that the climate of Earth has undergone several changes before finally settling into something that is comfortable and that has encouraged the survival of mankind. They call this the ‘Interglacial’ period. While the last ice age hit us thousands of years ago, scientists predict the next ice age to settle in far sooner than you can imagine. It jerks you out of your comfort zone to imagine that there is a possibility that this warm climate that we have been enjoying since time immemorial is going to come to an end with sheets of white throwing us into oblivion. Let me share with you the most relevant theory that Nat Geo brought to light for explaining the speeding of the Ice age. Ironic as it may seem, the phenomenon linked closest to this explanation is ‘Global Warming’!! That took you by surprise didn’t it?? It had me gaping at the screen for a couple of seconds trying hard for it to sink in – ‘Warming’ can cause ‘Cooling’???
Anyway, here goes the explanation in the words of Terrence Joyes and Lloyd Keigwin, Senior Scientists- “In order to balance the excess heating near the equator and cooling at the poles of the earth, both atmosphere and ocean transport heat from low to high latitudes. Warmer surface water is cooled at high latitudes, releasing heat to the atmosphere, which is then radiated away to space. This heat engine operates to reduce equator-to-pole temperature differences and is a prime moderating mechanism for climate on Earth. As the ocean waters are cooled in their poleward journey, they become denser. If sufficiently cooled, they can sink to form cold dense flows that spread equatorward at great depths, thus perpetuating the circulation system that transports warm surface flows toward high latitude oceans.” This is called the ‘Great Ocean Conveyer.’
The ‘Great Ocean Conveyer’ is a big contributor in maintaining a stable climate and in ensuring that the heat is distributed evenly throughout the planet. However, over the past few years, scientists have noticed a slowdown in this belt. Global warming has been causing the glaciers in Arctic to melt, hence forcing tons of fresh water into the ocean. Fresh water being less dense does not sink to the bottom of the ocean. Since the circulation system is maintained by cold water moving towards the equator and warm water towards the poles, the cold water movement has slowed down, hence leading to an overall slowing down of the Ocean Conveyer. If the Ocean Conveyer was to come to a halt, there would be no heat distribution at the poles eventually leading to a ‘Mini Ice Age.’
I could never imagine that the oceans are responsible for maintaining a stable climate in such a big way. It has truly made me stop back and think, will the coming generations really get a chance to see our planet the way it has existed for us…we’ve led to the near extinction of so many animals, felled trees and substituted the lush jungles with concrete ones, played with the law of nature, encouraged the release of harmful gases into the environment, lost our civic sense and dirtied our surroundings, wasted electricity and water, encouraged the use of plastic bags and polluted not only our cities but the planet altogether. Is this really what we want our children to grow up and look forward to?? I shudder at the thought of even giving birth to my child in a world where we’re ensuring that the future only spells ‘Disaster’.
The question that confronts us then, is, “What can ‘I’ do to contribute to a healthy environment?” While it may look like a mammoth task – stopping global warming, here are some of the simple yet effective ways-
1. Replace the standard light bulbs with energy efficient
fluorescents
2. Drive less-whenever possible walk, bike or carpool
3. Unplug your charger after use
4. Plant a tree!!!!
That can’t take much can it??? While it may sound a tedious task, replacing all your light bulbs or walking when you know the car stands in your garage, look at the difference ‘WE’ can make to the environment if each one of us took up this cause. The pieces of the World will automatically fall in place if we made the effort to put ourselves together. We can plant a tree can’t we??? Are you still waiting????

What have *YOU* done to save the earth?
I knew that would come sooner or later so just to answer your question S, I don’t have any standard light bulbs anywhere in my house, I don’t drive, so most of the times I land up walking till wherever I can, I never forget to unplug my charger after using it, I’m very particular about not wasting water, I NEVER throw out things from my car on the road, I’ve been a part of the Campaign against Shahtoosh shawls with WTI, I’ve collected funds for Friendicoes and next week I’m going to plant some trees behind my house. I care for my planet and will do as much as I can to save it…..the question is, will you???
Ya know what, I don’t appreciate the ‘what have you done bandwagon when it comes to this stuff?!’
It doesn’t matter if the person talking about a greener cleaner world is doing something. Because when the air goes bad you are going to breathe it too. So stop with the ego trip and be useful!
PS: Way to go sri!
Yes, I will
Hey Astrew…am glad u read my posts regularly..makes me feel I can write..:) Thanks for the support there..I would anyway never preach to others without putting it into practice myself..u know me girl….the next in line is ‘Save the Tiger’..man am I worried bout their fate…they’re gonna go and I’ll forever feel a part of the irresponsible world who were too busy in their own lives to even notice, let aside act on it…
Its nice to know about it…
you could have posted about the recent very much awareness of save our earth …24 hour live concert by VH1 in different places around the world this year…
100 + artists from around the globe joined their hands for this purpose….we are in extreme position and we ourselves are responsible for making a heaven on the earth….
Well it has been a year that i and my friend go in the same bike as we are in same college though we have our own bikes and in times i ride a bycycle instead of a bike…and also use power saver electricity bulbs…..as i said its better to start than never so…..S.O.S.
Isn’t it surprising that the two most common words GLOBAL & WARMING have become a sort of taboo of late. New theories are being invented and are linked with the 2 sacred words. Yup, the great ocean conveyer is the prime force determining whether on our beloved planet but they alone cannot trigger a future ice age. Ice at poles helps in lowering the earth’s temperature by increasing the earth’s ALBEDO i.e. more sun rays are reflected back and less is absorbed by the earth, thus earth’s temperature start decreasing. But hold on, here is a contradiction with GLOBAL WARMING theory, which says that there would be no ice sheets on poles in next 100 years. The giant reflector at the world’s end would be lost in Devy Jone’s Locker for forever. This reminds me of a recent so called documentary of Ex US Vice President, Al Gore: AN INCONVINIENT TRUTH. In the documentary Gore made similar contradictory claims about future ice age along with many other exaggerated global climatic threats. The documentary is a must watch but let me remind you to view as an awareness medium not a sacrosanct document.
The last ice age has occurred around 10000 years ago when ice sheets extend up to present day central US.
The some of the common reasons for triggering an ice age are:
• Change in atmospheric composition (Which we are doing with great pleasure)
• A meteorite from space (Oops they had done this in past, the dinosaurs…)
• A super massive volcano eruption (The Deccan Trap in peninsular India is a evidence of same)
• Change in earth’s revolution path, solar activities and
• Movement of continental plates…
For an ice age due to continental movement, three criteria must be satisfied like necessary conditions in mathematics proofs. They are
• A continent at either poles (Antarctica)
• A landlocked sea at either poles (Arctic)
• Large land mass at equators (Africa, Asia, South America are at equators up to such extent)
Since 2 conditions are satisfied, scientists have confirmed that there is always a risk of next ice age.
In the last I have to just say that what you have written is absolutely write but that is not the whole picture…
Read this…
A few months ago, TreeHugger Mark Ontkush wrote a post on his blog EcoIron titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year. The post lays out the following train of thought. “An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts.” Google, which has a white background and gets about ” 200 million queries a day” could reduce global energy use by 750 Megawatt-hours a year by simply changing the color of its homepage to black.
In response to this post a black version of Google emerged called Blackle.com. According to Blackle’s homepage at publication time, 4,408.917 Watt hours have been saved by. The site encourages users to “make a difference today [by] ? Blackling “energy saving tips” or visit[ing] treehugger.com a great blog dedicated to environmental awareness.” Nice
ideas. But how does the search measure up? Very well indeed. Give it a whirl yourself and start saving energy one search at a time. :: Blackle.com
WOW black saves electricity….
Let’s begin with turning this blog black, a small step in electricity conservation and big step for mankind.
But I have two questions
Is this really works in this way? What the total societal cost?
The facts provided by the saurabh holds only in the case of CRT monitors and energy saving varies from 5%-10% on different monitors. However all LCD monitors are completely insensitive towards the screen colour. The above mentioned findings are confirmed by the Energy Star is a US govt. body, which provides Eco labeling for products which consumes less energy. For unknowns its logo is the one which appears on many old CRT computer monitors at the time of booting.
Now coming back to black screens, the reading on black screen takes much more time, so I spent up more time reading the same page and consuming more electricity. Also it is a well known fact that, pupil of eye shrinks in bright light and vice versa. Since majority of users in India still have CRT monitors, notorious for emitting rays harmful for the eyes, one can assume the risk towards the eyes.
Two rather really simple ways to conserve electricity are
• Use minimum brightness and contrast (Electricity consumption is greatly reduced by this. I believe all those who have used laptops will agree with me)
• Switch of your room light after reading this post late in night…
Hey Saurabh..thanx for thats awesome piece of info….I’m already using Blackle.com..:)
Aniket bro: nice to see u visiting my blog…the info u’ve shared is rather interesting and ofcourse I feel very enlightened…hope to see you more often..
Wonderer: Ya..The live concert was a brilliant take on Save the Earth campaign..I saw most of it and must say was rather impressed..I admire the fact that U’ve been taking your own steps to Saving our planet…Keep up the good work!!
Why are you hell bent on saving earth?
Have a drink instead.
I guess I’m just PISSED off because I’m still at work at 1 o’clock on a Friday night!
Hmmm…Tanmay..wish these drinks could make our future brighter…I’d drink all day long and nights too..:) am hell bent on saving Earth coz our present is so screwed already..just trying to contribute to make the future worth living..u don’t want to???I empathize with ur work frustration though and that too on a Fri night…thats being way too harsh on urself boy..don’t kill urself already…way too many yrs ahead…hope u enjoyed the weekend after all the hard work…
